Discovery Harbour is a planned community 2 miles from Na`alehu, a once busy commercial center during the sugar cane plantation era which started in the late 1800's. Na`alehu began converting to other agricultural uses and tourism in the 1980's and '90's. Mark Twain lived here for many years. His home is a local tourist attraction.

Today, Discovery Harbour is primarily a retirement and second home subdivision owned primarily by West Coast, mainland transplants and upper-middle income families. All 900 lots have been sold and to date nearly 200 homes have been built. During 2004-2006, as many as 200 lots were purchased by pre-retirees who plan to build their home of their dreams in paradise the near future.

There is a great sense of community among owners and many activities available, in close proximity, for "on-the-go" residents. Discovery Harbour surrounds a golf course owned by the original developer and is the only golf course available in the southern part of the Big Island. While at present the golf course is being used only by residents and is operated in a maintenance only mode, new things are happening. The developer has listed the property for sale and is in negotiations with a private golf club operator. Additionally, the County of Hawaii has shown interest in acquiring the property for a municipal golf course with low play rates.

Many consider Discovery Harbour to be the "Beverly Hills" of the Kau and Puna districts; primarily due to the quality of the existing homes and availability of Hawaii County water and dedicated streets – both a rarity in the region.
